Mammals of Ontario

A beautiful, sunny winter’s day was the perfect time to visit the Canadian Raptor Conservancy. Where a wildlife rescue team showed us many mammals from surrounding districts that could no longer live safely in the wild. I had never seen any of these animals until today.

Some days are just like this.

A skunk, a red fox, a Virginia opossum and a 10 month old porcupine. These opossums breed prolifically with as many as 32 babies per litter. They have to keep the numbers up, though, as their life span is only 2 years and even then, many fall foul to prey within the first year.

Below is a groundhog; click on the image to get the Allan reference.

Allan!

Allan.. Allan… Allan….

This fox is actually a red fox, with rather unusual colourings. He was rescued from someone who was illegally domesticating and mistreating him. He never learnt how to socialise so unfortunately cannot be kept with other foxes.

Two rescued bobcats were being administered contraception, which failed. The result was this lovely lady.
